A Few Oldies, But Definite Goodies

I love it when they take a novel and adapt it onto the silver screen or even better, adapt it for a miniseries!

Here are a couple of older stories (and maybe a new one or two) that IMHO stand the test of time—Someone else must think so too, because they have all been adapted onto the big screen or for TV.

Brazen Virtue by Nora Roberts

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a novel that explores the dangerous side of desire, when a mystery writer in search of a little peace and quiet instead finds herself ensnared in the world of a real-life serial killer whose craving for murder stops at nothing . . . and no one.

Nora Roberts has always been one of my favorite authors. This was actually the first Nora Roberts book that I read, to which I proceeded to devour the prequel, Sacred Sins, three days later.

She has so many fun reads under her belt, many of which have been adapted for film or tv.

If you’re looking for something thrilling to watch, with a side of romance, I absolutely recommend the Netflix adaptation, Brazen starring Alyssa Milano, Sam Page and Matthew Finlan.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume

Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, really needs no introduction. I can’t believe they finally made this one into a movie. It was long overdue!

This book was such a staple in my childhood, and I would be willing to bet, it was a staple in most of yours too.

I think I read this the summer between my 5th and 6th grade year. I was utterly fascinated that she (Margaret) was looking so forward to her period!

Me? I was scared senseless for mine to come. Just reading about her in the closet trying on her pad for the first time, made my heart pound extra hard.

At that age I was an extremely shy and awkward girl. Just the mere thought that someone might possibly know I got my period; or worse, see me with the period paraphernalia, was just about the bane of my entire existence.

Were you part of the we must-we must club too? …It’s one of those things, if you know, you know. And if you read the book, you for sure know!

The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave

Another Reese’s Book Club pick and New York Times Bestseller

Before he disappears, Hanna Hall’s husband smuggles a note to her that simply reads, “Protect her.” Despite her shock and fear, she knows he’s referring to her 16-year-old stepdaughter, Bailey, who wants nothing to do with her.

I haven’t actually read this one… yet, but I’m certainly intrigued.

I really need to know, just where did her husband go? Why the hell is he leaving cryptic notes instead of just pickin’ up the damn phone?  And just who the hell did this woman marry?

Now that they have made this one into a mini-series, starring Jennifer Garner, I’m gonna have to read it. Because I know I’m gonna be watching that, and I have this dumb unspoken rule with myself that I won’t watch a show unless I have read the book first.

A Man Called Ove

This was my first Fredrik Backman Novel—Far different from anything I had ever read. I was so excited that they made it into a movie. For those of you who didn’t realize it, A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks is based off the Novel, A Man Called Ove.

Ove is the metaphorical poster man for the “get off my lawn” guy. He’s a grump with a rather rough exterior, but underneath it all, the man has heart.

In a heartwarming, not-so-usual, story about love, Ove battles sadness over the death of his wife.

Not really wanting to live without the love of his life, Ove meets his new next-door neighbor and her family when they back their U-Haul over his mailbox. Soon he realizes, there are many types of family.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey

Oh My Gosh! The idea of this is GENIUS! I wish I would’ve been the one to think of it! A dark twist on a children’s classic. I will say, there are a few things I might do a bit differently, but still it’s Genius!

Who doesn’t remember their trips to the Hundred Acre Woods? I used to love the Winnie the Pooh stories my mom would read to me before bedtime. I thought Piglet was the cutest little thing. …However, after seeing this movie, cute isn’t really how I would describe Piglet anymore.

I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews on this movie. I’d be curious to know your thoughts. If you have seen this movie, let me know what you think in the comments section below.

Salem’s Lot by Stephen King

#1 BESTSELLER • Ben Mears has returned to Jerusalem’s Lot in hopes that exploring the history of the Marsten House, an old mansion long the subject of rumor and speculation, will help him cast out his personal devils and provide inspiration for his new book.

I am actually fixin’ to do a buddy read of this one. I have always been fascinated by the idea of this book but haven’t actually had the guts to read it. Vampires are scary… Vampires from Stephen King? I’m pretty sure that’s the stuff nightmares are made of.

Even though production has been paused, they are in the process of remaking the movie version of Salem’s Lot. I didn’t see the original, but if they are remaking it, it must be pretty good. Not to mention, it’s from the King.

If you haven’t already, you can get any of these books here on Amazon or get one for free when you sign up for a free trial from Audible.

Until next time, stay brash, stay bookish and stay true to you!
