Danielle Steel’s “Southern Lights”: A Brash Book Review

I’ll admit it. I’ve been floundering a bit since I finished the 4MK series. So I decided to take a change of pace and go back to my reading roots. Enter- Danielle Steel and her novel, Southern Lights. I first started reading her novels shortly after high school. To date, I don’t think any other author has gotten me in the feels as much as her books have. We are talking some serious ugly crying. She is a maestro of weaving intricate stories with seriously emotionally charged plots. Even though this one is a bit older, I think originally published back in 2009, she does not disappoint. If you’re on the lookout for a captivating read that offers a perfect blend of drama, romance, and suspense, Danielle Steel’s “Southern Lights” should be at the top of your list.

Summary

“Southern Lights” opens in the bustling, high-stakes world of Manhattan’s legal scene, where we meet our protagonist, Alexa Hamilton. Alexa is a successful assistant district attorney, juggling a demanding career with the challenges of being a single mother to her teenage daughter, Savannah. The novel’s initial setting in New York is filled with the grit and intensity one would expect from a legal thriller.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Alexa is assigned a high-profile case involving a notorious serial killer. As she digs deeper into the investigation, she receives disturbing threats that not only endanger her but also put Savannah at risk. To protect her daughter, Alexa sends Savannah to her estranged father’s home in Charleston, South Carolina, setting the stage for a poignant exploration of family, love, and the echoes of the past.

Themes and Characters

One of the standout elements of “Southern Lights” is its rich tapestry of themes. At its core, the novel is about the complex dynamics of mother-daughter relationships. Alexa’s fierce independence and determination contrast sharply with Savannah’s longing for a connection with her absentee father. This contrast sets the stage for a nuanced exploration of reconciliation and the quest for identity.

Charleston serves as more than just a backdrop; it becomes a character in itself. Steel’s vivid descriptions of the South – with its historic charm, societal norms, and slower pace of life – offer a stark contrast to the frenetic energy of New York City. This juxtaposition underscores the novel’s exploration of past versus present and tradition versus modernity.

The characters are so well-developed and relatable, you’ll feel like you’ve know them all of your life. Alexa is portrayed as a strong, capable woman, yet little by little the author peels back her layers to reveal vulnerabilities and insecurities. Savannah’s journey is equally compelling, as she navigates her own identity and the complexities of her parents’ troubled past. I actually listened to this one on Audible vs. reading it and loved the southern drawl of the narrator when he was reading the parts based in South Carolina.

Writing Style

Danielle Steel’s writing style in “Southern Lights” is as unmistakable as a neon sign in the desert – straightforward yet full of vivid color. She’s like the tour guide of your dreams, whisking you away from the noisy, chaotic streets of New York to the tranquil, postcard-perfect lanes of Charleston with such ease you’ll wonder if you’ve accidentally booked a first-class ticket. Her ability to balance the tension of a thriller with the emotional depth of a family saga makes this novel well worth reading.
