The Complexities of Kinship: “Keep it in the Family”

A Review of “Keep It in the Family” by John Marrs

Okay… you’ve seen this one everywhere, John Marrs, Keep it in the Family.  It’s in the bookstores. It’s online. All over Instagram, and TikTok with the caption, Chapter 39…IYKYK.

Well… I didn’t know, but since I am nosy as hell, I wanted to, so off to my kindle I went! I promised myself, I wouldn’t peek ahead and since I am true to my word I didn’t.

As the story was unfolding and I got closer and closer to the infamous chapter 39, the anticipation was building and building.

Then I got there. Chapter 39—I will say, it wasn’t what I expected. But I can honestly say I giggled through the entire chapter. I hate to be cliché, but IYKYK…

Was this the best book I ever read? No. Was it even in my top 10? Debatably. Was it believable? Probably not entirely. But was it worth reading? Most Definitely! And here’s why.

John Marrs stands out as a writer unafraid to push boundaries and challenge conventions. His latest offering, “Keep It in the Family,” is a gripping exploration of family dynamics, secrets, and the lengths to which individuals will go to protect their loved ones. Wading through the murky waters of familial relationships, he weaves a tale that is as thought-provoking as it is thrilling.

What sets Marrs apart as a storyteller?

It is his ability to create characters that feel authentic and complex, and “Keep It in the Family” is no exception. From the enigmatic patriarch, whose past mistakes come back to haunt him, to the fiercely loyal siblings grappling with their own demons, each character is fleshed out with nuance and depth. As the layers of their family history are peeled back, readers are drawn deeper into their lives, rooting for some while questioning the motives of others.

John Marrs swears the entire plot of “Keep It in the Family” came to him in a dream. If that’s true, sign me up for a lifetime subscription to his REM cycles, because this book is like superglue for your hands — once you start, you really don’t want to stop!

One of the novel’s greatest strengths lies in its exploration of the theme of loyalty versus self-preservation. The author deftly navigates the moral gray areas that accompany familial bonds, forcing readers to confront uncomfortable questions about where their own allegiances lie. As secrets are unearthed and alliances are tested, the Hunter family is forced to confront the consequences of their actions, leading to unexpected revelations.

Marrs expertly explores the ways in which our pasts can come back to haunt us, highlighting the complexities of human nature and the lengths to which we will go to protect the ones we love. In a world where privacy is increasingly scarce and the lines between truth and deception are blurred, this novel serves as a timely reminder of the importance of honesty and transparency in our relationships.

From its pulse-pounding opening to its creepy conclusion,

“Keep It in the Family” is a masterclass in suspenseful storytelling. Marrs’ skillful pacing keeps the tension simmering throughout, building to a series of shocking twists that left my mind spinning more than a couple of times.
