The Only One Left by Riley Sager

Once again, I bow down to you, Sir.

Going into this one, I thought, okay… another Lizzie Borden type tale, I love Riley Sager, but how interesting can this one be.

I should have known, Riley Sager really is such a master at his craft, I was completely engrossed all the way through this book. I binge read from the 50 % mark because I just had to see where he was going with this. The twist? I didn’t see that one coming or the ending!

This will be one I will have to take the time to go back and re-read so I can look for the clues that he left us along the way. They really were so smoothly placed, I missed most of them.

What’s it about?

Kit McDeere, accused of negligence in her mother’s death, has been suspended from the in-home caregivers company that she worked for. When her six-month suspension is up, Kit’s old boss has a new assignment waiting for her—one with an ultimatum attached. Either she takes the job he is offering her at Hope’s End, or she is fired for good.

At Seventeen, Lenora Hope

Hung her sister with a rope

At Hope’s End, in 1929 the Hope family murders chilled the community. Now 54 years later, Kit is tasked with caring for Lenora Hope, who the community has silently convicted of massacring her entire family. It’s either take the job, or be fired, and Kit can’t afford to pass it up.

Stabbed her father with a knife

Took her mother’s happy life

Lenora Hope, now bedridden and rendered mute by a series of strokes, can only communicate by tapping—once for no, twice for yes.

As they get to know each other, Lenora lets Kit in on a secret—a secret she only shared with her last caregiver, Mary—Lenora can also communicate by using an old typewriter, and she wants to tell Kit the truth about the night her family was killed.

“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said

But she’s the only one not dead

Line by line they are determined to set the record straight about that night, but Kit can’t help but feel that Lenora is holding out on her.

After Kit finds the old caregivers body, she realizes she’s been lied to, but by who?  Lenora? What more could she be keeping secret? Besides, she couldn’t have killed this woman, she’s confined to a wheelchair and can’t move, right?

Not knowing who to trust at Hope’s End, Kit sets out to find out what really happened on her own.

What didn’t I like about this book?

The only thing that I didn’t like about this book was that it ended. Riley Sager always leaves me wanting more more more!

I am anxiously waiting to see what the next thing he writes will be!
