A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham

This instant New York Times Bestseller has been all over the internet, bookstores, TikTok, EVERYWHERE. So, I figured it was high time time to give in and take it for a spin—I’m so glad I did!

What do you do when you don’t know who you can trust?

What about when you don’t even know if you can trust yourself? Do you seek help from a therapist? But what if you are the therapist? Where do you turn then?

As a child, six teenage girls went missing from Chloe Davis’s small Louisiana hometown. Nearly destroying her family, Chloe’s dad confessed to the crimes and went to prison.

Twenty years later, as a psychologist in Baton Rouge, Chloe is busy planning her wedding. When one teenage girl goes missing, then another… and another, Chloe’s world starts to crumble. Before she knows it, the past has come crashing back in and is threatening to devour her whole.

“A Smart edge-of-your-seat story with plot twists you’ll never see coming.” — Karin Slaughter.

I LOOOOOVE Karin Slaughter! If she says it is good, trust me, it’s good! She writes some pretty wicked stuff herself. And it turns out, she is absolutely correct. I thought I knew who the bad guy was time and time again. I’m usually pretty keen with this stuff, but there were so many twists and turns along the way, it took me until the very end to finally get it right.

Don’t miss Stacy Willingham’s second novel All the Dangerous Things, if it’s half as good as this one, It will be totally worth the read. I’m hoping to see much more from this gal!

Unfortunately we missed out on what would have been a great opportunity, If you happen to live near Summerville, South Carolina, that is.

Main Street Reads was hosting a Thriller vs. Horror Match Up between Grady Hendrix’s How to Sell a Haunted House, and Stacy Willingham’s All the Dangerous Things. An all day event where these two brilliant minds talked about their newest releases, their rise to book/ and movie deal fame, and what it takes to write like they do.

Which Genre do you prefer? Thriller or Horror? Let me know in the comments section below. I’d love to see what y’all pick!

I myself would probably have to choose Thriller over Horror.

But don’t get me wrong, I do love that fear factor. While horror is more focused on generating a feeling of fear and unease—uhh…who doesn’t love creepy clowns with red balloons in sewers? I just miss the suspense, excitement and action that you get with a thriller. Both genres are so closely intertwined, that sometimes it is hard to see the distinction.

Will A Flicker in the Dark make it to the silver screen?

Maybe not the silver screen, but rumor has it,  there is an adaptation in the works for the small screen. A Flicker in the Dark is set to be a limited series for HBO Max.

There is no release date as of yet, but I have heard that Emma Stone is attached to the project. I’m not sure if she will be starring in the series as well as on the production team, or if she will strictly stay behind the scenes. I personally think she would make a great Chloe Davis.

If you haven’t already read it, you can get it here on Amazon or get it for free when you sign up for a free trial from Audible.

I should Note: A Flicker in The Dark deals with the subject matter of alcoholism and addiction, if that is a trigger for you, this book may not be a great fit.

Until next time, stay brash, stay bookish and most definitely, stay true to you!
